Moustiers Monteith
Glass cooler or so-called Monteith, with oval body with a scalloped rim with twelve notches. On both sides a handle. The piece features depictions executed en camaïeu in green of figures and a bird among flowers and insects, usually called 'déccor de grotesques'. The ceramic painters have been inspired by Callot's oeuvre (Nancy 1592-1635) without copying his work literally.
Moustiers, France.
Mid 18th Century.
Opening: 29,0 x 19,5 cm.
Provenance: Van Beek Collection nr 35 (VB51), acquired on September 23rd, 1976.
A monteith was filled with ice water to rince and cool the glasses. Wine glasses were suspended by their feet in the scallops so that their bowls could be cooled in the water.
